Seoul Samsung Announces Recruitment of Lee Dae-sun

The Samsung Thunder in Seoul have recruited Lee Dae-sung as a free agent, heralding a move to strengthen their team's power. Lee has returned to the Korean Basketball League (KBL) a year after announcing his challenge on the overseas stage.

Seoul Samsung officially announced on May 21 that it has "recruited Lee Dae-sung as a free agent." The contract lasts two years, with the total first year's remuneration set at 600 million won, of which 180 million won is set as an incentive. Lee's joining press conference will be held at the KBL Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of May 22. At the meeting, Lee is expected to explain why he returned after completing his first overseas challenge in a year and the controversy in the FA market.

Lee Dae-sung is a top-ranked guard who ranks first in scoring for two consecutive seasons in the Korean league. He played in 51 regular-league games as a member of the Daegu Korea Gas Corporation in the 2022-2023 season, scoring 18.1 points on average, the most outstanding among Korean players. He was also the top scorer at Goyang Orion in the 2021-2022 season, scoring 17 points on average.

Lee Dae-sung, who declared his entry into the overseas league saying he wanted "competition and growth," originally tried to challenge the Australian league, but changed his direction to the Japanese B league due to difficulties in negotiations. He joined the Shihosu Mikawa team in Japan and averaged 7.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in the regular league this season.

The news of Lee Dae-sung's transfer to Samsung has left his former team Korea Gas Corp. (KGC) in regret. Korea Gas Corp. gave up the right to renew the contract and completely released it in respect of Lee Dae-sung's overseas challenge. If Lee Dae-sung moved to a domestic club, Korea Gas Corp. could receive compensation worth 200% of his remuneration or a bundle of compensation players and compensation. Korea Gas Corp. claimed that Lee Dae-sung released him as a FA, believing that he would challenge for at least two years on the overseas stage.

Jung Yi-in, secretary-general of the Korea Gas Corporation, said at the FA briefing held at the KBL Center on the 8th, "It's not easy to just let him go like this. Lee Dae-sung also has actions and careers he has shown all his life, and I don't know if he will do that."

Lee Dae-sung's return is expected to be a great boost for the Samsung Lions in Seoul. Samsung, which finished bottom for the third consecutive season with 14 wins and 40 losses in the 2023-2024 season, is preparing for a new leap forward under coach Kim Hyo-beom. As Kim is known to be close to Lee, the recruitment of Lee Dae-sung is expected to greatly help rebuild the team.
